Oxidative damage is a fact of life. It occurs as our body carries out the normal metabolism it needs to survive. This is because metabolism produces so-called ‘free radicals’, which cause oxidative damage and the production of more free radicals … creating a cycle of damage. When you exercise, your metabolism is working harder and so more free radicals are produced. This occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

April 2014 CHALKBOX was founded in a council gym in Sevenoaks. We have had an awesome journey and are now based in Ightham (Borough Green) in a multi functional space with high quality CrossFit gear.
The key to coming back from an injury should not be a passive approach (sit around and hope for it to get better). Although that being said there are definitely moments where passive modalities can help ease symptoms but if we don’t incorporate the active components then we are missing the overall big picture of returning from injury.

Caffeine certainly has a weight of evidence to support its claim to enhance athletic performance. Indeed, it is one of few supplements we can claim with relative confidence as ‘proven’. Carbohydrates, protein, and creatine are others. But even so, this does not mean we should knock it back ad libitum … there are limits to its capacity, as well as potential downsides and doping (yes really!) factors to consider.

Stop avoiding running and start working on an elementary movement in life. To help you to get going we are organising a trial run on Sunday 28th of April. The run will start and end at the box taking you around the countryside.
When I first started CrossFit I had only seen a barbell a handful of times in my life, like a lot of people, I was intimidated by the bars, plates and weight rooms in commercial gyms – so I didn’t go in them.
The aerobic system forms the base of the pyramid, without a strong base we cannot support the layers on top. This means that if we have a poorly developed aerobic system then the anaerobic systems will not be able to function optimally.
We all know exercise is, overall, good for health. But to get the benefits we must fuel correctly, which includes fuelling to support the immune system. Exercise puts a stress on the body and if the nutrients we need to support the immune system and exercise are in limited supply, both short term and chronic intense training sessions can result in immuno-compromise and increased inflammation. It is why elite athletes can be more susceptible to infection and illness. Inadequate sleep and stress also play a critical role in suppressing the immune system.
